The Emmy Nominations are in and…Elizabeth Mitchell Was Left Out? A Lost Fan Mourns.
Excitedly I perused the headlines. I was wondering when those Emmy nominations were going to roll in. As an avid Lost fan I was sure there would be at least two nominations in the acting category if not three. Michael Emerson as the very creepy and oh so bad Ben, Terry O’Quinn as the spiritual John Locke, and Elizabeth Mitchell as Juliet. Juliet. The tortured woman who just wanted to get off the island. I was sure her Emmy nomination was sealed when she screamed at Ben that he was a liar and that she just wanted to go home. Come on Ben!! Let the lady go home.
As I clicked on a link for the full list of Emmy nominations I hurriedly read through and skimmed each category. I was happy to see Heroes being recognized and Ugly Betty. Well deserved nominations for creative shows. Heroes for keeping me on the edge of my seat every single episode and leaving me dizzy from all the twists and turns and Ugly Betty for being such a delightful dark comedy. Charming, witty, and surprisingly touching. Absent though from the list was Lost. Now I suppose that some could argue that Lost had “lost” some of its appeal for the first part of season 3 but did anyone consider the last half of the season? To name a few “make me think about it all night and e-mail my friends all day moments” how about the paralyzing spider incident, Juliet’s branding, Charlie’s ultimate and heroic demise, Locke’s submarine ambush, Jacob’s creepy appearance, the Looking Glass discovery, or Desmond’s precognitive ventures? What about the finale that left me reeling and traumatized causing me to think of the very end of the series and how could I wait until 2010 to know what will really, really happen?? What show out there did that? Lost did that. My only hope is that Jack Bender will win for outstanding director for Lost’s episode “Through the Looking Glass” or Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindeloff for Outstanding Writing.
Back to Elizabeth Mitchell. Glancing over the list of nominees for Outstanding Supporting Actress I do realize that it is a tough group to break into. Rachel Griffiths of Brothers and Sisters is an amazing actress and I wouldn’t be throwing any fits if she won the Emmy. Sandra Oh’s breakdown in the season finale when she was left at the altar was gut-wrenching this is true. But what about Elizabeth Mitchell? Did Grey’s Anatomy really need three nominations? Elizabeth Mitchell played one convincing mysterious “Other” whose very essence left us wondering week after week whose side was she really on. In my opinion, this talented and lovely lady was left out of the pack for some other regular nominee favorites. With all that said I can only hope that Season 4 of Lost will give Elizabeth Mitchell more amazing moments to shine as the seemingly levelheaded but you know incredibly manipulative “Other”, Juliet Burke. Is she good? Is she bad? Or does the lady simply want to go home. We may not know until 2010 but hopefully in 2008 she’ll see her name where it so deserves to be, listed as a nominee for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
