There are a slew of alternative clothing stores and online retailers that are beginning to cater to the alternative fashion scene.

Taking their cue from the Japanese culture, the style of Gothic Lolita has made fantastic progress in the States as well, especially with the underground punk and goth scene. Referring to a Japanese teenager or younger adult who dress in elaborate Gothic costumes, this style of clothing has become increasingly popular due to the proliferation of Japanese culture in the States.

If you visit any major anime, comic book or videogame convention in the states, chances are you will find a variety of people taking inspiration from the Japanese fashion scene. With easily accessible online retailers that specialize in Gothic styles, it becomes quite easy to delve into this fashion scene yourself. In Japan, there are many variations on the Victorian Gothic look, and they are in no way attempting to discover the ways of the Western Gothic. Mainly, the Japanese consider their way of dress to be a compliment to the many Visual rock bands they adore, who consistently dress up in elaborate costumes on stage.

If you’re interested in dressing in the style of Gothic Lolita, there are many variations of costume you can choose from. For example, frilly knee length or mini skirts with an invisible crinoline underneath are an essential component of most Gothic Lolita styles. Victorian-era blouses with ruffles, black blouses with white accents, babydoll dresses, the “French Maid” or “Alice in Wonderland” look and headresses are all very popular within this fashion scene. Keep in mind when dressing the part, your makeup must be very minimal because the Gothic Lolita style requires pale faces, accented with some mascara and a small amount of black eyeliner, as well as red lipstick if desired.

There are many online retailers that cater specifically to the Japanese fashion scene, and you can pick and choose outfits, accessories and makeup to complement your Gothic Lolita style. There’s no denying that Japanese fashion influences are apparent in everyday society.

If you’d like to stand out from the crowd and show off your unique fashion sense, Gothic Lolita styles are a great way to do so.
