Heroes Chapter Six: Spinning Out of Control

Linebreak Linebreak

It seems the harder the heroes try to make things right in their own eyes and go against their better judgment, the worse things get.  You can only lie, kill, and betray so long before things start to spin out of control.  For example, what would happen to Kensei now that Hiro innocently fell in love (basically nicely betrayed Kensei) with Yaeko?  His choice whether he meant to or not cut Kensei deeper than any wound a sword could make.  Would Daddy Bennet’s frantic attempts to save his family (which have so far included lying and murder) turn into the nail in his coffin?  What about Bob from “The Company”?  Would he really not revert to using the dangerous virus if it meant saving his life or that of another?  What twists and turns would be revealed in this episode which I’m sure was aptly titled “Out of Time”.

Back in the past we saw that Kensei had Hiro’s face immersed in steam from an opium bath to keep him from using his abilities and Yaeko and her father were all tied up.  Kensei had been stricken deeply and quite strongly over Yaeko’s turn of love away from him to his betrayer Hiro.  Now he had sided with White Beard for half the country and the love of Yaeko which she vehemently denied him.  Sadly Kensei was now corrupt and unforgiving and Hiro was as high as a kite on his opium.  Kensei told Hiro that he would change history.  What had Hiro done by staying too long because of his secret love for Yaeko and then acting on it with that forbidden kiss??

After Kensei left them alone in the the tent, Yaeko picked her lock, released herself and got Hiro out of his opium bath. She begged him to transport them away from the camp and he did just in the nick of time.  When Hiro came out of his drug induced stupor he defended Kensei to Yaeko.  Pain had made his heart cruel but he really was good inside.  I’m glad Hiro could see that quality about him because I sure wasn’t able to.  Kensei used to be a drunk, then Hiro “reformed” him and now he quickly turned back to his old ways?  No, I think that Kensei had a dark heart all along and though he was shown the good way to go, one little hiccup and he returned to his evil ways because that was what suited him best.  He had a choice and he clearly made it.  I know Hiro cut him deeply but even when a man is cut deeply he can still do the right thing.  Kensei’s heart was and would always probably be poised toward evil.

Leaving Yaeko to go wait for him under the cherry blossoms, Hiro returned to White Beard’s camp and threw gun powder in the tent where all of the new guns were kept to blow it up and save Japan.  There he met up with Kensei and urged him to help him stop White Beard.  Kensei though was lost in his bitter sea salt of tears and refused to help and instead fought Hiro.  He declared that anything that Hiro loved he would lay to waste.  Now that was a very, very important statement from Kensei that I will address later on.  So Hiro teleported out of the tent just before it blew leaving Kensei inside because he refused to go with Hiro leaving Hiro to believe that Kensei was dead.  Hiro!  Kensei can regenerate!!  Why in the world did Hiro think Kensei was destroyed?  On a side note Sark/Kensei is my personal highlander.  Now I want to go rent that movie.

After the fire smoldered out Hiro dug through the rubble and forlornly took Kensei’s burnt mask and helmet.  Then he went to meet Yaeko under the cherry blossoms.  Here was a very bitter sweet moment for Hiro who truly mourned the loss of Kensei (although I still couldn’t believe he thought he was dead), turned his back on staying with Yaeko his true love, had one last beloved kiss and then teleported back to the future smack dab into Ando’s office and back into his dorky Hiro self.  Rejoicing at his return Ando was delighted at Kensei’s mask Hiro brought for him but his joy quickly faded as he revealed to Hiro that his father had been murdered.

Meanwhile in Russia, Noah Bennet was taking pictures of all the paintings that were leading up to his future death.  There was sword fight between Hiro and Kensei, Bennet dead with Claire kissing someone in the background, Niki banging on a door, the virus, Mohinder with a bandage on his nose holding a smoking gun, and Peter looking through a window with a quarantine sign on it.  We got an aerial view of the pictures and there were several others that weren’t revealed to us.  We’ll have to see what they are in future episodes.

After taking his pictures he called Mohinder and grilled him to see if he had a gun.  He told Mohinder there was a picture of Mohinder holding a company gun and he was going to forward the pictures to him.  Mohinder told him not to because now he had a partner and was being watched.  Bennet was bent on saving his family and basically Mohinder learned that he was expendable (or at least Bennet didn’t deny that he was!).  Mohinder didn’t know what Bennet’s agenda was anymore.  It looked like things were unraveling quickly for this pair.  Bennet hung up and burned the pictures.  Bennet had a one tracked mind and it was a nice effect to have the fire reflecting in his horn rimmed glasses.  Maybe a foreshadowing of what was to come.

Back in New York Bob was evacuating the facility because Nathan and Parkman had come to warn him that Maury was coming to kill Bob.  The plan to save Bob?  Niki and Mohinder were to inject Maury with the virus to take away his abilities.  This brought Mohinder up in arms because they didn’t know the impact of the virus and Parkman was all messed up because Bob told him he had the same abilities as his father.  He just needed to figure them out.

As Mohinder and Niki prepared to find Maury and inject him Matt visited Molly to tell her he was sorry and that he loved her and somehow he broached over into her thoughts and she heard him.  Matt really did have more to his powers than he thought.

Back to Mohinder.  He still didn’t like the idea of using the virus and Niki just wanted to be cured and to go home and see her son.  Then D.L. showed up thanks to Maury’s mind bending abilities and goaded her.  He told her that she was a killer and before the day was up she was going to kill everyone.  Uh oh.  Maury was in very close proximity to be manipulating Niki like that!

Meanwhile Bob and Nathan were locked up in Bob’s office to keep him safe.  Bob revealed to  Nathan who Adam Monroe was.  Finally!!  Adam was the one who had convinced everyone that they belonged together (I’m assuming that was Linderman, Nakamura, etc.).  Adam Monroe was the one trying to kill them.  Adam was the visionary.  Adam thought he was a god.  He talked about holocausts, plagues, and punishing the world and it was Linderman who had discipled him.  They locked Adam up and threw away the key but he had escaped a couple of weeks ago.  Then Bob dropped a bomb shell on Nathan.  Peter was alive!!  You mean Nathan became a drunk and lost his family for nothing!!  Why didn’t they tell Nathan sooner!!

Back in the lab Niki and Mohinder were prepping the virus and D.L. showed up again to goad Niki some more.  Mohinder tried to interfere and help Niki realize she was hallucinating and it was Maury not really D.L. but she totally knocked him out and went looking for Bob with the syringe.  Maury with his evil eye was in the background orchestrating the whole thing.

Over to Bob’s office. Nathan was shown a tape of Peter at “The Company” 3 months earlier.  Bob said they tracked him to Cork, Ireland and then they lost him.  Ah ha!  I bet you that Elle is Bob’s daughter!  She was the one tracking Peter and I bet Bob, her dad made her come home.  She has to be his daughter!  Then Niki came to beat down the door to get at Bob and beat it down she did.  Hence, the Isaac Mendez picture of Niki banging on a door Bennet found in Russia had just come to pass.  Matt tried to go help and ended up with Molly in her dreams.  She had been locked in a room and was so glad to see him.  Matt got desperate and called for his dad and pulled Maury into the room.  Oh Matt, you are tapping into your powers!  Meanwhile Nathan was the one who helped Niki calm down and think straight.  He told her that she was in a nightmare and needed to think of Micah.  Then Niki gave herself the shot containing the virus.  She couldn’t get the nightmare out and she had to stop herself.  Wow, Nathan and Parkman are becoming quite the team!  Nathan took care of Niki and Parkman was taking care of Maury.

With Niki stopped it was now just Matt and his dad locked in a room with Molly  Matt realized that they were in his old house on the night that Maury left them.  Whoa, ho!  They were in Maury’s nightmare now!  Matt told Maury to turn himself in and Maury couldn’t so they had a face off.  Maury tried to make Matt believe all the bad things about himself he had felt since his dad left but Matt stood up to him and told him he was a good man, a good cop, a good father and Maury didn’t know anything about that.  Maury was the one who had left them.  All Maury had now were his own nightmares.  So Matt used his powers and was able to leave the nightmare with Molly and left Maury alone in his own personal nightmare.  Then Matt woke up and Maury was out cold on the floor and Molly woke up just fine and healthy!  It all was kind of Freddy Kruger but not nearly as scary that was for sure!

As Parkman comforted Molly we saw that Mohinder now had a patch on his nose just like Bennet saw in the picture of Mohinder with the smoking gun.  The antibodies were not working on Niki.  This was a new strain of the virus.  There was no cure.   Niki was going to die.  Mohinder went and reported this to Bob.  Bob went into action mode and said to keep Maury sedated, destroy every last file and then he gave Mohinder a report on Claire Bennet.  Bob thought she could save Niki with her regenerating powers.  Mohinder pointed out that Bennet wouldn’t let them just take Claire.  Then Bob handed Mohinder a gun to help him and showed Mohinder that Ivan the Russian was dead. That Bennet had killed him.  Bennet was getting sloppy, emotional, and dangerous.  This brought Mohinder to confess his allegiance to Bennet to take down “The Company”.  A little shocked Bob wanted to know why Mohinder was just letting him know about the plan now.  Mohinder was unsure who was right and who was wrong but he knew it was time to stop playing games.  Bob said a storm was coming and Claire was the key.  It always came back to the cheerleader.  Claire could save Niki which I interpreted that if she saved Niki she would save the world from the virus.  Mohinder took the gun.  He had to do the right thing for Niki and everyone.  Oh Mr. Bennet, you were trying so hard to stop your future from happening but so far it was an out of control locomotive heading your way!!

In the future we found Peter and Caitlin in New York City.  The year was 2008.  The streets were empty of all people but they were soon surrounded and picked up by a hazmat team and taken to decontamination.  In total confusion they were scrubbed down and Peter was left in an empty warehouse to be questioned because they thought he was dead.  They had his death certificate and everything. But, Peter was clueless and was alive and had no sign of infection and they were deporting Caitlin back to Ireland much to Peter’s chagrin.  Peter then found out that on March 20, 2007  the first infection of the Shanti virus was reported.  Oh, Shanti was Mohinder’s sister who died. Since then it had killed 93% of the people on earth and there was no cure.  Peter was then showed a room with a large window.  As he gazed through the window he saw that it was full of dead bodies.  The room was just one week of casualties from the virus and there had to be thousands of casualties.  Again this was the picture Bennet saw while in Russia of Peter looking out a window with a quarantine sign.  That too had come to pass.

A little later Peter was introduced to Angela Petrelli who he didn’t remember to be his mother.  She urged him to remember and then we found out that Nathan died in the first wave of the virus.  Watching Angela with Peter made me wonder what her ability was or if she even had one.  She told Peter he could change the future, he could change history.  He must.  Then at her urging Peter got a flood of memories back regarding Angela and he remembered that she was his mom.  Did Angela help him remember who she was?  Is that her ability?  Can she restore memory loss.  Even more importantly, how did Peter lose his memory?  Did “The Haitian” wipe out his memory and was Bennet involved?  Why was Peter’s memory wiped.  To protect him?  To save the world?  To save Claire?

After he left the warehouse area and was being transported somewhere else Peter saw Caitlin and tried to get them to let her be with him.  They wouldn’t though and hauled off Caitlin.  He tried to teleport them as she franticallky called for him but he only teleported himself back to Montreal leaving Caitlin in the future all alone.

Frustrated and confused in Montreal Peter tried as hard as he could to get back to Caitlin but heard a noise so shot sparks out of his hand at someone.  That someone was none other than KENSEI!!  Kensei was Adam Monroe.  Kensei was the one killing everyone from “The Company”.  Kensei was the one who killed Nakamura by pushing him off the rooftop.  It all made sense.  He could regenerate so a fall from a building was nothing.  Remember how he said that anything Hiro loved he would lay to waste?  Looks like Kensei was making good on a promise.  Kensei/Adam had murdered Hiro’s father.  Does this mean there will be an ultimate showdown between Hiro and Kensei?  Oh how the plot thickens.  This means that Claire never dies either. Maybe they should face off!

Speaking of Claire, she was in her own mess at home in California.  With dad out of town West texted her and he was downstairs in her house making waffles!!  What was he thinking??? Boy if looks could kill West would have been dead from Claire’s glare. Claire’s mom thought he was adorable.  Claire was in way too deep now as West showed her their drunken cheerleader story that hit the newspaper.  It claimed that the drunk cheerleader saw a boy fly and girl not die after falling 50 feet.  Claire was terrified that someone would find out about their abilities and more terrifed that West would meet her father, the horned rimmed glasses guy who had abducted him.

After breakfast Mr.  Muggles (one of our favorite characters in Heroes) was next to Claire and West as they made out on the couch while listening to her I-Pod.  She said she had to talk to him which made him think he was going to fast for her but really she wanted to confess to him that her dad was the one who abducted him.  I guess there really was no easy way to say that.  But, before she could confess her dad came home, scared the crud out of West because he recognized him and told Claire to run with him.  Then Claire had to say it was her dad which made West even more confused so he flew out leaving Claire to stare off into the wild blue yonder.  Before he left he did ask her if it was a trap.  Well, come on now West. You were the one who practically STALKED her!!!  She tried to stay away from you.  Hopefully he’ll come back to his senses and come back to see Claire.

Then Claire’s mom told Daddy Bennet about West, that she liked him and that he was a fine young man.  She told Bennet that he knew this day would come.  Boy did he ever!!  He saw the painting and his death!!!  He totally knew it was coming! Claire tried texting West but to no avail and then her dad threw the paper at her and was mad that she couldn’t’ keep her nose clean.  Oh man, a big daddy daughter fight.  She pointed out that they didn’t believe he was at a copy conference.  She wanted to know what he was doing, if he was out abducting people.  Well, kind of if you count tying up Ivan and then putting a bullet in his head.  He told his family to pack their bags because they were leaving.  Claire put her foot down and said that he was leaving with out her.  Whew!

Next week we are promised answers but I’m sure those answers will only lead to more questions.  We know that Peter and Adam are in some type of institution which I assume to be the one Adam escapes from.  I’m sure he and Peter both escape.  Whatever happens, hopefully Peter will figure out that Adam Monroe is bad news, that Mohinder finds Claire to help save Niki and the world, and that Sylar’s abilities don’t turn back on anytime soon.  Are Noah Bennet’s days really numbered?  Will Claire and West get back together?  Will Peter find Caitlin?  Will they really answer my questions next episode?  I highly doubt it.  But that’s why we love Heroes, isn’t ‘it?
