Heroes Chapter 6: Some Heroes Cross the Line While Others Sprint Right Through It
It seems that of late our heroes are faced with some very difficult choices and this episode only seemed to make it clearer and clearer where the line was and who was gingerly and sometimes excitedly stepping over it. Even good-hearted Hiro couldn’t seem to keep his toes, or rather lips from crossing over. However, a few of them refused to cross it and instead listened to their conscience.
In Ireland Peter and Caitlyn were mourning the death of Ricky her brother. Peter must go to Montreal and by golly Caitlyn was going too. She needed revenge on the BLEEP who did this to her brother. Besides, she was in the picture with Peter. So after what I’m sure was a lengthy flight they arrived in Montreal to the place in the picture and what was etched above the door? Was it an apartment number? No!! It was the helix sign. As they entered into the darkened place with stored furniture and other items Peter found a note taped to a mirror in plain sight for him. The note was from Adam Monroe telling Peter that they were right about “The Company”, the world was in danger and it was up to them. Now who was this mysterious Adam Monroe? We only got a teaser this episode but we know Bob had a file on him and mentioned him in passing to Mohinder.
As Peter reflected on what it could all possibly mean he “accidentally” teleported himself and Caitlyn to the future. No longer were they in Montreal but instead they found themselves in New York City. It was in shambles and vacant as they stood in Times Square. Grabbing a piece of paper he found on the ground it was a mandatory evacuation notice to be in effect June 14, 2008. What happened to the city and why did everyone need to leave? Hopefully Peter can figure out how to teleport them back.
Meanwhile back in California, Claire was seriously stressing out about not making the cheerleading squad. She had lied to Daddy Bennet and now what was she going to do? At least Mae, one of the cheerleaders was sticking up for her but mean and snobby Debbie wasn’t going to have her on the squad even though she did great.
As she lamented West joined her and encouraged Claire to work harder at getting on the team. Maybe a little public humiliation was needed to knock Debbie down a notch or two.
That night West and Claire hatched their master plan. The cheerleaders were all at the school that night for a little “pep talk” from Debbie. As we watched Debbie mercilessly write each cheerleaders weight on their foreheads as she guzzled alcohol I couldn’t help but think she was one incredibly lame loser. Who would want to be like her? Man, did I care that much about being a part of the “in-crowd” when I was in high school? These girls need some serious coaching from their parents and teachers about who the real losers are!! Claire asked to speak privately to Debbie and then the public humiliation began. As Claire “begged” to be on the squad West dressed in black and a mask flew down, grabbed Claire, flew her up a good distance and dropped her on the stairs killing her and then flew after Debbie. Of course Debbie freaked, called the police and as she babbled on about Claire being dead and a flying man Claire showed up just fine and normal. How’s that for public humiliation? Plus Claire and West could “hide” under the fact that Debbie was drinking like a lush. Surely it was a hallucination in her drunken state.
Later Claire felt bad for disgracing Debbie, that maybe they had done a little too much (crossed the line) and that they risked getting caught. But in the end Mae happily reported that Debbie blew a .13 for alcohol, got suspended and was off the squad. Welcome to the team Claire!
In New York we found out that Monica went with Mohinder and learned her skill was adopted muscle memory. He explained that there were certain genetic markers but where they came from was a mystery. As Bob shared how impressed he was with Monica, Mohinder noticed a new file with the name Adam Monroe on it. Then Bob said the unthinkable. He wanted to inject Monica with a variant of the virus to take away her ability and that Mohinder needed to do it. Slightly panicking he called Bennet who urged him to just do it. Sometimes you had to do bad things to take down “The Company”. Clearly Mohinder was having an ethical dilemma and was getting pressured from the “good” and the “bad” guys to do the “bad” thing.
So what was Mohinder to do? As he approached her with the shot Monica at first didn’t want to do the testing because she didn’t like needles but looking at Mohinder with trusting eyes she told him to go on ahead and do it. Was that what pushed Mohinder over the edge? The innocence of Monica? Ticked as all get out he stormed in on Bob, threw a chair through the other “virus cures” and said he was taking Molly and leaving. Go Mohinder! Strangely enough Bob had a change of heart and apologized. He had been with “The Company” 30 years and had some regrets. Then he talked about Adam Monroe. That he was someone Bob had at his disposal. Then Bob took Monica back to New Orleans and told her to take a look around her. With her gift, the town could use a little amazing. Is this the birth of St. Joan?
Meanwhile back in New York Niki paid a visit to Mohinder. She was now working for the company and was Mohinder’s new partner. Well, if it was Niki. It kind of looked like Jessica to me. Niki wouldn’t want to stay and work, she would want to go home to Micah. Now Mohinder didn’t know if she was “cured” or not. I highly doubt it. She was hired to keep an eye on Mohinder which will make for tough reporting to Mr. Bennet.
Speaking of Bennet, he was in Odessa, Ukraine to see Ivan and we now know that Bennet speaks Russian! All of these little secrets of his past were coming out. It turns out that Ivan was Bennet’s mentor and taught him all he knew. Tying up Ivan Bennet demanded that he tell them where Isaac Mendez’s paintings were at or he’d have “The Haitian” erase all memories of meeting his wife. Refusing to give up the information Bennet had his memory erased and then listened while Ivan tried to reason with him. Ivan wanted to make a deal. He wanted him back. It was a “New Company”. It had changed. Well, Bennet had one thing on his mind. Those paintings! He wasn’t there to strike a deal. He was there to save his life!
Grabbing a picture Bennet asked about one of Ivan’s daughters and Ivan admitted she had died of Leukemia. So with that Bennet went for the throat and told “The Haitian” to erase Ivan’s memories of his now deceased daughter. Oh Bennet. You were merciless and honesty what comes around goes around. Of course Ivan cracked and told them where the paintings were after the thought of losing all he knew about his beloved daughter. The paintings where in the warehouse where they held the liquid man. Oh, interesting tidbit. Then, Bennet to my horror shot Ivan in the head so as not to risk being found out. Bennet more than crossed the line there! He leapt over it and kept running.
In the warehouse Bennet and “The Haitian” found the pictures. There was a hand with a vile (which must be a variant of Bob’s virus), a woman beating on a door or a wall, Hiro and Kensei, and a guy with a smoking gun. Is that guy Mohinder? Peter? West? Adam? Then of course there was the final picture of Bennet shot dead. Was the man with the smoking gun the one who shot Bennet? Then, a picture they didn’t show too well looked like a body on the stairs? Was that Claire and West’s practical joke with Claire dead on the stairs? Daddy Bennet is trying so hard to prevent his fate but fate keeps rolling on by.
Back in Mexico the trio of heroes is still trying to cross the border. Sylar with his creepy ways was totally drooling over Maya and her abilities. He confided in her the abilities he used to have and then creepily touched her hair. Alejandro woke up and should have just thrown the slimy Sylar out the door right then. Instead he told Maya he wanted to hire a coyote and cross the border without Sylar. They fought and she told him that God sent Gabriel and that they would cross the border together. Chalk up another victory for Sylar. Alejandro was on to him but Maya was more than clueless, blinded by Sylar’s ability to take them to Dr. Suresh.
Arriving at the U.S. border they saw that the fence wasn’t finished so they gunned it onto U.S. soil where they were immediately surrounded by the fanatical citizen border control known as fake police to Sylar. Sylar bossed her to drive around them and as Maya lost control of her gift she listened to Sylar and gave into it. She did not listen to her brother but instead killed all of the border control. Maya crossed the line and used her gift in a bad way, just like she did to get Alejandro out of jail. Oh Maya, you shouldn’t go around obeying Sylar!! He wants to take your brain!!
Then Alejandro drew his line in the sand since Maya kept stepping over hers. Next time Maya used her gift in a bad way he wouldn’t be there to reverse it and Gabriel (Sylar) would be dead so she’d better think about that.
Finally back in the past Hiro and Kensei made it to White Beard’s camp to save Yaeko’s father. Hiro had made Kensei a better man and he was so grateful. When they found Yaeko’s father he revealed that they couldn’t just save him and leave. White Beard now had guns and if their gun plan succeeded it would be the end of the Samurai forever.
Kensei then freed the sword smith and they fled. One of White Beard’s men shot at Yaeko so Hiro teleported her away from the battle. There she discovered it was Hiro who had made Kensei who he was and that Hiro was the one she had fallen in love with. Oh no! Hiro was messing with history. He made Yaeko fall in love with him by just being Hiro and of course he had fallen in love with her too. As she leaned in for a kiss he stopped time. Hiro, you need to run!!! You need to teleport back to the future. You need to resist this temptation because if you don’t you will cross the line and maybe ruin history forever. But, Hiro could not control himself and for love he kissed her anyway and Kensei saw the whole thing!! It was the kiss that fractured time.
Later Kensei confronted Hiro. He told him that he was the man who showed him no sword could cut him but he had cut him deeper than any sword possibly could. Then Kensei did the unthinkable. He handed over Yaeko and her father to White Beard and knocked Hiro out cold. Was Kensei working for them the whole time or did “bad love” cause him to turn to the dark side. Oh Hiro. You crossed the line and then Kensei crossed the line. The domino effect was in place and now what was going to happen? Why did you have to go and awkwardly kiss Yaeko? Yes, it was very awkward.
Next week we know that 93% of the world’s population is gone. Did a variant of the virus get out by alchemist Bob? What does Peter find out in the future that will help him altar the past? How will Hiro clean up the mess he made in Japan and will he ever? He is still missing according to Ando. Will Maya keep giving over to her dark side to save herself? We know that Mr. Bennet will do what it takes to save himself and his daughter did what it took to get on the cheerleading squad to mask her lie about West. It seems like the fate of the world rests once again on the broad and good shoulders of one Mr. Peter Petrelli. We know from the past he would do what it takes to save others including sacrifice his own life. He is the one true hero who will use his powers to better mankind and not just himself. Surely Peter would not and will not cross the line.
