Destroy Your Denim: DIY Tips to Look This Hot

Have you ever seen those young girls with their distressed jeans that look like they’ve somehow gone through a grinder several times?

You know the ones I mean; the denim with the holes through the knees, the bleach stains, the faded, washed out look? If you’re like me, you can’t justify spending 60 dollars on a pair of jeans that look old, regardless of the trend. However, if you’re dieing to get your hands on one of the hottest looks in denim right now, you can easily destroy your jeans to get this ultra coveted look.

Creating the ultra faded jeans look is actually a two step process. The first step involves softening the denim, because this makes it much easier to destroy. First and foremost, you’ll want to pre-wash your jeans in a washing machine by themselves. Secondly, throw your denim in the dryer with a tennis shoe and a towel so the fabric can dry. You’ll want to do this routine three times, and on the third wash you’ll add a whole bottle of fabric softener to the mix. Don’t worry about purchasing any fancy softeners; a generic store brand will do just fine, and save you money in the long run!

Once you’ve softened the denim to a workable finish, it’s time to begin destroying your jeans. You’ll want to put the jeans on for this process, and create a solution of 50% bleach and 50% water. Wearing the jeans, sit down and place the solution anywhere on the top as well as where natural wear would occur. You may also want to bleach the bottom cuffs of your jeans as well. Be creative!

Using sandpaper, you’ll be able to fray your hemlines and wear-in the knees of your denim for that ultra vintage look. Then you can cut or tear holes wherever you’d like, then dry on high heat overnight. When you wake up, you’ll have the hottest look in denim without having paid outrageous department store prices for the same style.
