Britney’s Back With the Beat: Dance Track Sure to Be Hit in Clubs Across the Nation and World
She did it. Britney Spears is back with her new sure to be hit single “Gimme More”. Thanks to people.com I was able to quickly find a link and listen to her little dance ditty. After my first time through I found myself grooving in my seat even though “Spiderman” the cartoon was blaring in the background and my four year old and his two year old little neighbor friend were having a knock ‘em down foot war. Thankfully I had earphones on and blocked out the toddler drama for my few minutes of the greatly anticipated new Britney single. As the song opened and I got into its pulsating beat I found myself wondering why I couldn’t quit thinking about Madonna. Maybe it’s because Madonna’s “Confessions on a Dance Floor” seriously made my thirty-something body want to get up and shake my booty or at least load it on my MP3 player to run to on the treadmill. If not that maybe it was Britney’s breathy vocals sprinkled through the track. I don’t think it’s so bad that I think of Madge. After all, she is a Hollywood icon. Madonna had a flop album and then released her “Confessions on a Dance Floor”. Britney has had a flop in the press so maybe a good dance hit will push her career back into the positive just like it did for fellow lip locking partner Madonna.
I will not pretend to know everything about Britney. I don’t own any of her albums. Every song I have heard from her has been via my clock radio perched on my dresser in my bedroom or pumped through the grocery store stereo system. I’ve watched her music videos online and over the years have followed her life through headlines in the press like any good entertainment junkie would. I haven’t taken in a concert, joined her fan club, or tattooed her name on the back of my neck. I am a regular person out there not necessarily for or against the super pop princess although I find myself wanting to champion her more and more of late.
Listening to Britney’s single over and over and over again (so I can really hear it amidst my hollering kids) I can see that she has a hit on her hands and it’s coming fast on the heels of her very public and slightly skewed life. I could imagine the lights flashing, the disco ball spinning, the strobe light flashing, the glow sticks waving, and the feet and bodies thumping all to the tune “Gimme More”. Miss Britney wisely released a very dance club friendly track. Surely the critics will receive it well, right? Well, that is hard to say. Because of the negative media glare in her life and the obvious desire to see Britney brought low we must all hold our breath to see if the media will declare mercy and actually give an honest review and not one tainted by her personal life. But is that possible? Can the reviews be fair? Look at all the negative publicity drama Kelly Clarkson had when her new album came out. Her album is fantastic yet reviews were tainted with her personal management struggles. Already most critics had an opinion before even listening to a single song. Is this Britney’s fate? Surely not we all gasp in dismay! Well, it probably will be. Why should the tide turn for tabloid torn down Britney? For her sake and the sake of the rest of pop stardom I hope she gets a fair trial but hope is a dim word in the ever proverbial light of entertainment reporting lately.
Fortunately for Britney her new single has a great beat, catchy hook and I’m sure millions of people world wide will get their dance on for Britney’s latest track. True to form it’s all Britney. Earlier I had said it was reminiscent of Madonna but it wasn’t long into the song and it was all Britney on my mind. Her vocals made me feel like I was coming home to the comfort of Britney world. That place that existed what seemed like so long ago on her fourth album “In the Zone”. Even though she has gone through a couple of marriages, had a couple of kids, and has been the subject of thousands of bad headlines her music is still her. I know there will be some out there who would argue that she is a manufactured puppet of a pop star. You can argue all you want what Britney is or what Britney isn’t. You can say she can’t sing and you can say that it’s over for her but record sales speak louder than the critics. What other female solo artist has debuted every single album at number one? Nobody. It’s all Britney. Selling over 76 million albums worldwide swings a little more weight than people bashing her name on an hourly basis. A grammy winner and song writer, she is a pop icon princess and love her or hate her she will continue to reign. As for her trouble in “Tinseltown”? All of her personal drama hasn’t seemed to alter the musical core of Britney which is in the end the epitome of the ultimate American pop star.
